Share

Cal State Bakersfield Coach Pat Douglass, who last weekend won his third NCAA Division II championship in five seasons, will interview today for the UC Irvine job, sources say.

The search committee will also see Utah assistant Donnie Daniels today.

Douglass has coached at Bakersfield for 14 seasons. His teams have won at least 20 games in each of the last 11 seasons. Bakersfield has been to the Division II Final Four seven times under Douglass.

The Roadrunners were 29-4 this season and defeated Northern Kentucky, 57-56, Saturday to win the national title. They also won national titles in 1993 and 1994.

Douglass was a finalist for the Long Beach State job in 1996 and the Cal State Fullerton job in 1992.

Daniels and Douglass are the fourth and fifth candidates to be interviewed. Riverside College Coach Bob Schermerhorn, Northern Arizona Coach Ben Howland and Irvine assistant Joe Cravens were interviewed last week. A decision could be reached by the end of this week.
