Walters’ Big Day Helps El Modena Advance in Baseball

Mike Walters hit two home runs and drove in eight runs as El Modena and Anaheim played to an eight-inning 12-12 tie in an Anaheim Lions baseball tournament game Monday at Brookhust Park.

Walters, a junior right fielder, hit a grand slam in the fifth to tie it, 6-6, for the Vanguards, who advanced on total bases.

Walters hit a two-run home run in the seventh to tie the score at 8. Anaheim (3-4-1) scored four times in the eighth, but El Modena (3-5-1) came back with four more, including the final two on a double by Walters.

In other tournament games:

Cypress 4, Western 4 (Western advances on total bases)--Kevin Hatton had two hits and an RBI for Western, which loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with no outs but failed to score.

Valencia 16, San Francisco Riordan 5 (time limit)--Richard Martinez had three hits and drove in two runs and Manuel Ramirez had a double and three RBIs for visiting Valencia (6-3).

In the Division I championship game of the Garden Grove softball tournament:

Calvary Chapel 4, Cerritos Gahr 1--Kelli Matthews led off the fourth with a single and scored on Christy Ring’s triple for Calvary Chapel. Ring then scored on a throwing error.

In the fifth, Linda Van Hook singled to drive in Jacqueline Beadle and Kara Schones, who was pinch running for Amanda Hallaway. Hallaway had singled to center and Beadle reached on fielder’s choice.

Hallaway was the selected as the tournament’s most valuable player and was one of six Calvary Chapel players on the 20-person all-tournament team.

In the Division III championship game:

Rosary 9, Buena Park 2--Marissa Perez had three hits, including a home run, drove in four runs, scored two and stole two bases for Rosary (7-4).

In nonleague softball:

Laguna Hills 3, Fountain Valley 1--Jenna Ramesch’s sacrifice fly drove in the tying run for Laguna Hills (4-4) and on the same play, Lesley Simien moved from second to third base and scored the go-ahead on an errant throw to third.

Westminster 9-8, Long Beach Wilson 0-2--Amy McManus had five hits, including a home run, and also walked for host Westminster (5-1). Brenda Quinn had a triple and pitched a three-hit shutout and then had a double in the second game.

In nonleague golf:

University 381, El Toro 407--Brian Sinay shot par rounds of 36 at Rancho San Joaquin on March 18 and at El Toro Marine Base Monday for University (5-0).

In Garden Grove League boys’ volleyball:

La Quinta 3, Los Amigos 0--Scott Ogilvie finished with 16 kills and nine blocks for visiting La Quinta (4-2, 2-0), which won, 15-8, 17-15, 15-12.

Bolsa Grande 3, Garden Grove 0--Senior Jeff Aichelman led Bolsa Grande (7-2, 3-0) to its seventh consecutive victory with 14 kills. Bolsa Grande won, 15-8, 16-14, 15-12.
