The Mighty Ducks’ long-distance trip to start the 1997-98 season finally was made official by the NHL. They’ll play the Vancouver Canucks in Tokyo on Oct. 4 and 5 in 8 p.m games that will be broadcast live on the West Coast at noon Oct. 3 and 4.

“The travel shouldn’t be bad--considering that when we come back, we’ll be arriving before we left,” General Manager Jack Ferreira said.

The Ducks’ games in Japan next season will start at noon in Tokyo and be broadcast at 8 p.m. Oct. 3 and 4 on the West Coast, not noon as reported in Thursday’s editions.

The Ducks will get a four-day break before their home opener on Oct. 10, and the league said schedulers will try to keep both teams close to home for about the first week of the season to ease the transition. The teams will leave North America on Sept. 29, and return Oct. 5.

Right wing Peter LeBoutillier sprained his left knee during Wednesday’s game and will return to Anaheim instead of continuing the trip.
