Mission Viejo Needs Last Event to Beat Mater Dei in Swimming

The girls’ swim meet between the Mission Viejo and Mater Dei came down to the last event.

Jessica Klenner, Mari Okumura, Lindsey Hartman and Christina Murphy swam the winning 400 freestyle relay in 3 minutes 45.34 seconds to give the Diablos an 88-84 South Coast League victory.

Hartman, also on the winning 200 medley relay, won the 50 (25.78) and 100 freestyles (55.21) for Mission Viejo. Both were Southern Section qualifying times.

In the Century League:

Villa Park 96, Foothill 73--Jessica Klugman won the 200 freestyle (2:01.79), 100 butterfly (1:05.58) and swam on the winning 200- and 400-freestyle relays and Maureen Dunn won the 50 free (25.86) and 100 free (56.48) for host Villa Park (3-0, 1-0).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 97, Valencia 73--Ashley Carter won the 100 breaststroke (1:14.34 and the 200 individual medley (2:22.76) for Brea Olinda (3-2). Jenny Nelson won the 100 freestyle (1:00.91) and the 50 freestyle (27.45) for the Wildcats.

In the Sea View League:

Irvine 132, Corona del Mar 38--Top-ranked Irvine won every individual and relay event, with its 200 medley relay team of Daniele DeAlva, Amanda Beard, Erin Zehntner and Lana Kraus winning in an All-American time standard of 1:51.93. Olympic medalist Beard won the 50 free (25.28) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.06). Both are Southern Section qualifying times.

Santa Margarita 99, Newport Harbor 71--Siobhan Herlihy was a double winner for Santa Margarita. Her time in the 500 freestyle (5:16.73) was a Southern Section qualifying time.

In Century League boys’ swimming:

Foothill 120, Villa Park 50--James Thornton won the 200 and 500 freestyles (4:39.51) and Rob Arroyo won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke (1:04.40) for visiting Foothill (3-1, 1-0).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 92, Valencia 75--Oliver White won the 200 freestyle (1:49.88) and the 100 freestyle in a Southern Section qualifying time (48.96). Matt Flesher qualified for the Southern Section meet in two races, posting a 50.25 in the 100 freestyle and a 1:04.99 in the 100 breaststroke.

In the Sea View League:

Irvine 101.5, Corona del Mar 68.5--Irvine’s depth helped the Vaqueros to the win, with second- and third-place finishes in most of the events. Freshman Jeff Natalizio, who was the leadoff swimmer in the winning 200 medley relay, won the 200 individual medley in a Southern Section qualifying time of 2:02.61. Kawika Taravao of Corona del Mar, won two events--the 50 (23.17) and 200 freestyles (1:48.74)--and was on two winning relay teams.

Santa Margarita 118, Newport Harbor 50--Philippe Demers (100 backstroke) and teammate Matt Martin (500 free) got their section qualifying times for Santa Margarita.

In Freeway League baseball:

Buena Park 14, La Habra 5--Buena Park trailed, 5-2, before exploding for seven runs in the fourth inning and five in the sixth. Richie Pohle had two doubles, a triple and three RBIs, and Ernie Jaime and Cesar Carrillo each doubled and homered for the Coyotes (7-4, 2-0).

Sonora 19, Sunny Hills 3--Ryan Vorell had two hits, including a grand slam, a double and five RBIs to lead seventh-ranked Sonora (7-1, 2-0). Mike Winzenread was three for four with two doubles for the Raiders.

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 5, Santa Ana 3 (8 innings)--Jason Miller hit a two-out RBI single to score Jeff Wilkinson to give visiting Ocean View (5-4, 1-1) the lead in the eighth and Bobby Mayorga singled to drive in Miller.

In South Coast League baseball:

Mater Dei 13, Trabuco Hills 4--Kevin Mitchell drove in nine runs with a single and two homers, and Nick Harlambakis was three for three with two RBIs for second-ranked Mater Dei (7-2, 3-0), which has hit nine homers in two days.

In the Anaheim Lions baseball tournament:

Savanna 6, Walnut 3--Sal Alvarado was three for four with three RBIs and Jeff Klingelsmith had three hits and two RBIs for Savanna (4-6).

Western 11, El Modena 2--Francisco Vasquez had three hits and three RBIs for Western (6-6), which scored five runs in the first and third innings.

In Olympic League golf:

El Dorado 206, Tustin 243--Corey Fox was the medalist for El Dorado (5-2), shooting a one-over-par 36 at Western Hills.

In nonleague golf:

Aliso Niguel 431, Capistrano Valley 461--Brett Tighe was the medalist for Aliso Niguel (7-0), shooting an 83 at Marbella and El Niguel, par 71.

In nonleague softball:

Irvine 1, San Clemente 0--Debbie Tomoguchi’s first-inning ground out scored Brett Nakabayashi with the only run and Colleen Young struck out six and pitched a six-hitter for host Irvine (4-2), ranked 10th in the Southern Section Division I preseason poll.

Rosary 2-2, Troy 0-1 (1st game, 8)--Laura Fulton hit a two-run homer in the eighth to win the first game, and she pitched a complete game in the second for Rosary (9-4). Erin Connors’ home run in the second game gave Rosary a 2-0 lead.

St. Margaret’s 12, Wildomar Cal Lutheran 0--Abbey Arnold (3-0) tossed her second no-hitter of the season and struck out 17 for St. Margaret’s. Arnold was also three for three at the plate and Tracy Sherman had three hits, including a two-run triple, for the Tartans (6-1).

In South Coast League girls’ track:

Mission Viejo 92, Mater Dei 44--Ashley Bethel finished first in the 100 (12.3), 110 hurdles (15.0) and long jump (17-11 3/4) for second-ranked Mission Viejo (2-0, 1-0).

In Garden Grove League boys’ volleyball:

Bolsa Grande 3, Santiago 0--Jeff Aichelman had nine kills for first-place Bolsa Grande (8-2, 4-0), which won, 15-10, 15-1, 15-6.
