Moser’s Discus Mark Is Second Best in State

Huntington Beach’s Scott Moser continued his assault on the discus record book Thursday, recording the second-best mark in state history--206 feet 2 inches--in a Sunset League dual meet at Huntington Beach.

Capistrano Valley’s Brian Blutreich set the state and Orange County record of 210-8 in 1985. Moser, a senior who won the state discus title last year, also won the shot put in 55-2 1/2 in the Oilers’ 79 2/3-47 1/3 loss to Edison Thursday.

In Empire League boys’ track:

Century 81, El Dorado 57--Century’s Jesse Gomez won the 400 meters in 53.70 seconds and Floyd Watson picked up wins in the discus and shot put to pace their team to victory over El Dorado.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 115, Valencia 27--Senior Jim Norum broke a school record in the discus (174-2) for Brea Olinda (5-1, 1-0). The previous record, 170-3, was set by Chris Conrad in 1993. Norum also won the shot put at 49-5.

In Sea View League girls’ track:

Santa Margarita 71, Newport Harbor 65--Amanda Shanklin won the 100 hurdles (15.0 seconds), the 300 hurdles (45.9), the long jump (16-10) and the triple jump (36-6).
