Steinau’s Triple in Third Clears Way for El Toro

Matt Steinau’s bases-loaded triple in the third inning broke a tie score and sparked a nine-run inning as El Toro defeated Aliso Niguel, 19-8, in the first round of the Wienerschnitzel Big West Tournament at University. Steinau had three hits and five runs batted in in the game.

El Toro (6-4-1) plays Marina at 1 p.m. Monday at Windrow Park.

Pitcher Brandon Gilligan struggled for the Chargers en route to his third victory. Gilligan helped himself by hitting a three-run home run in the fifth inning. Gilligan finished with five RBIs.

Brady Benson had two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored for El Toro.

Aliso Niguel dropped to 7-3 on the season.

In other Wienerschnitzel Invitational games:

Marina 13, Lakewood 10--Eric Archer had three hits and two runs for Marina (6-5). Adam Spiker had two hits, three runs and two RBIs for the Vikings.

Marina’s Jeff Jones hit his fifth home run of the season.

Servite 10, Crescent City Del Norte 0--Brian Garko had three hits and four RBIs for Servite in a first-round victory. Jeff Hultner also had three hits for the Friars (10-1).

Pitcher Brian Wolfe pitched a two-hitter and didn’t give up a walk.

Trabuco Hills 14, Los Alamitos 5--Todd Gelatka was four for four with three runs, four RBIs and a home run for Trabuco Hills (4-5). Graham Robby had two hits, two runs and four RBIs for the Mustangs.

University 2, Orem (Utah) 0--Garrett Atkins did not give up a hit in six innings while striking out eight for University (7-4). Mike Gamble replaced Atkins in the seventh inning, giving up one hit and striking out the side.

In the Pride of the Coast tournament:

Bolsa Grande 17, Estancia 2--Jack Kusuda pitched a one-hitter, striking out five and walking five for Bolsa Grande (9-3). Sam Baeder was four for five with two doubles, a triple, four RBIs and a run for the Matadors.

Laguna Beach 10, Corona del Mar 6--Mike Labeda was two for four with a double, a home run, two RBIs and two runs for Laguna Beach (4-6). Micah Grant (1-1) pitched three innings of scoreless relief, striking out four for the Artists.

Fountain Valley 8, Loyola 1--Chad Gonzalez was three for three with one RBI and a run scored for Fountain Valley (8-3). Gonzalez (2-0) also pitched four innings, striking out three and walking one for the Barons.

San Clemente 12, Newport Harbor 1--Shawn Tracht was four for four with four RBIs and a run for San Clemente (5-5). Oscar Montecinos was two for three with a three-run home run, four RBIs and two runs and Ben Adair was three for three with an RBI and a run for the Tritons.

Santa Margarita 8, Newhall Hart 7--Jeff Kuno was two for four with a double, a home run and three RBIs for Santa Margarita (9-2). Catcher Casey Grzecka was two for four with an RBI and threw out the tying run at second in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Eagles.

In Olmpic League baseball:

Whittier Christian 9, Calvary Chapel 3--Jason Carpenter had 10 strikeouts and scattered five hits in a victory for Whittier Christian (3-3-1, 1-2). Carpenter had a triple and scored two runs.
