Four-Star Films : ‘The Devil and Daniel Webster’

Share

This is Stephen Vincent Benet’s New England version of “Faust, With the Devil” (Walter Huston, as the wickedly gleeful Mr. Scratch, perhaps his greatest non--”Sierra Madre” performance) battling oratorical genius Daniel Webster (Edward Arnold) for the soul of farmer James Craig (pictured with Jane Darwell). Benet co-wrote the script, and director William Dieterle--who had appeared in Murnau’s “Faust”--and cinematographer Joe August had a field day, bringing back all the shadowy delights of German Expressionism (Bravo Tuesday at 10 a.m.).
