Home Burns While Family Is at Church

Share

While a family of nine attended an Easter vigil service Saturday evening, a fire broke out in their mobile home and destroyed the dwelling, according to fire officials and neighbors.

The quickly spreading blaze, in a remote area of east Lancaster known as High Vista, left a pile of twisted metal and charred clothing. The next day, little was recognizable in the wreckage except blackened pages of a Spanish-language Bible scattered about. Two small storage sheds also were destroyed.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department reported receiving a call at about 9:20 p.m. and arrived on the scene 10 minutes later.

Neighbor Robert Aldaba said he was with the family at Monte Sinai church, located only a few hundred feet from the trailer, when the fire broke out. Aldaba said about 20 congregation members ran out of the church and watched as firefighters tried to save the dwelling.
