Spanish-Language Radio

Share

Judith Michaelson in her March 17 piece “More Radio Stations Say Adios to English” makes the misstatement that in 1975 the Liberman brothers made KLVE the first Spanish FM station. Wrong! In 1968, my Garden Grove FM station KTBT, the first radio station in America to broadcast in stereo, became all-Spanish, broadcasting Mexican music in the daytime and tropical at night. Despite our low power and the fact that we were in Orange County, the two Los Angeles “powerhouse” Latino stations convinced national advertisers that they could cover Orange County as well as we could. With our inability to attract national accounts, we had to drop the format after a few months.
