OCC Schedules Encore Viewing of Hale-Bopp

Due to overwhelming public interest, Orange Coast College on Friday will host an encore viewing of comet Hale-Bopp.
Three previous viewings attracted a total of 1,500 people.
“We had a viewing last Friday night and drew more than 600 people under cloudy skies,” said Nicholas Contopoulos, an astronomy instructor. “The public is really interested in this phenomenon. We want to give local residents one more chance to view the comet at OCC. We’ll cross our fingers and hope for clear skies.”
Astronomy students will set up 15 telescopes to accommodate the public. Weather permitting, attendees also can view the moon and Mars.
The free event is from 6:30 to 10 p.m. in the college’s Adams Avenue parking lot, between Fairview Road and Harbor Boulevard.
