Police to Serve Diners for Special Olympics
Off-duty Los Angeles police officers will substitute their ticket books for order books, tie on aprons and balance serving trays Wednesday during the West Valley station’s third annual “Tip a Cop” event at a Red Lobster restaurant in West Hills.
Fifty officers are expected to join the eatery’s staff throughout the day at 22800 Vanowen St. The officers will serve patrons through the lunch and dinner hours, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., to benefit the Special Olympics world games and local law enforcement’s torch-run programs.
Officers will be assisted in their service by restaurant staff members, and diners will be able to give a tax-deductible donation to the officer in addition to a regular tip for the server. All of the officers’ tips will be counted toward those goals.
For the past two years, West Valley officers have raised the most money at a single restaurant in the nationwide program. This year the goal is to raise $10,000.
Nationally, law enforcement organizations and restaurants hope to bring in $500,000 for the games.
