City Considers Plan to Aid Boys & Girls Club

Share

The City Council is expected to consider a measure Tuesday that would speed the flow of Community Development Block Grant funds to the Boys & Girls Club of the San Fernando Valley, which needs $100,000 for a hardwood gymnasium floor.

The measure before the council calls for stronger ties--a “memorandum of understanding”--between the Community Development Department and the Department of General Services. The plan, designed in part to streamline block grant projects, has been approved by the council’s Community and Economic Development Committee.

Paired with the Boys & Girls Club request on Tuesday’s council agenda is an $80,000 project at the Crenshaw Senior Citizens Multipurpose Center.

The Boys & Girls Club began several years of renovations to its Pacoima building after being cited in 1991 for various building code deficiencies, including seismic safety concerns.

The club took advantage of $280,836 in block grant money for those repairs, completing all work except the new gym floor in April 1996. There is no timetable for the installation of the new floor.
