The City Council has honored resident and Los Angeles Laker Byron Scott and members of the Varsity Club for their charitable efforts on behalf of children in the community.

The 14-year NBA basketball veteran is the founder of the Byron Scott Challenge for Children charity events. The Varsity Club is a group of business and entertainment individuals who support a variety of charitable events benefiting children.

Through his endeavors over the last decade, Scott has provided about $2.5 million to 27 South County charities.

“He’s given back an awful lot to the community,” Mayor David M. Swerdlin said.

In appreciation of his efforts, the council presented Scott with a resolution of commendation and a framed print of Mission San Juan Capistrano signed by all five council members.

The board of directors of the Varsity Club, whose members include Scott, actor Jerry Mathers, Orange County Sheriff Brad Gates, Laker owner Jerry Buss and Olympian Janet Evans, also received resolutions of appreciation from the council.

In thanking the council for the recognition Tuesday, Scott praised the city for welcoming and accepting his wife and three children into the community.
