A citizens panel studying the future of Newport Center has recommended that it be expanded by nearly 1 million square feet in the next two decades.

Councilman Dennis D. O’Neil, who established the committee, said the hope is that an expansion of the center would boost the city’s sales tax revenue.

O’Neil said he envisions a mixed-use development so people could live, shop and work near the center. The committee recommended new office and retail space, senior housing and a day-care facility.

The center already has three hotels and hundreds of businesses near the large Fashion Island shopping center. Construction on the center’s first residential development, called the Colony apartments, began last year.
