Movies, movies, movies: I have a 10-year-old, Shane, and Friday is a no-homework night, so we rent a movie and make dinner or go out to a movie. If we rent a movie, it’s usually something my son would like. He likes karate a lot, and recently we saw Jackie Chan’s “Supercop,” which he loves. If we go to a movie, we like the Encino Town Center. It’s close, has a bunch of different theaters, and there’s a Koo Koo Roo right there.

Saturday outings: Usually we do some big activity. Recently my son, one of his friends and my boyfriend and I went to Universal Studios, then had lunch at Tony Roma’s and walked around CityWalk.

Kids’ play: Usually we are at home Saturday nights. We might rent a movie or we play really loud music and dance. Our house is a gathering place for the neighborhood kids, so we end up with a bunch of 10-year-olds showing each other the latest dance steps. They listen to rap, rock ‘n’ roll, old Beatles, and we’re big fans of the new Shawn Colvin album. Or we may go for a late afternoon bike ride.

Brunch: There is an Indian restaurant in our neighborhood we like called Taj Mahal or we go to the Magic Castle for kids’ day. They have an amazing brunch and shows with junior magicians. I also like Georgia for chicken gumbo, green beans and macaroni and cheese.
