Just Her Size

UnionTools, a leading manufacturer of non-powered, long- and short-handled garden tools, has added the Lady Gardener line, designed specifically for women.

The tools have smaller, slimmer handles and are lighter in weight to better suit female gardeners.

Lady Gardener tools (11 in all, about $13 each for short handles, $18 for long) have ash hardwood handles for durability and flexibility. The heads of the tools are matte black, with burgundy ferrules, brass-colored collars and ferrule caps.

Lady Gardener tools are available at Sears, Kmart, Home Depot, HomeBase and other hardware stores throughout the county.

Cleaning hard-to-reach windows can be a major pain, but Armor All’s E-Z Spray line of products can make it faster and easier.

The spray window wash cleans surfaces in about a minute, and you don’t need a ladder, nor do you have to apply lots of elbow grease.

All of the products (about $5 to $8 per bottle) feature a sprayer that attaches to your garden hose. Flip the switch and the cleaner is applied; flip it again and the surface is rinsed clean. The sprayer can reach most second-story windows.

E-Z spray products, available at home centers throughout Orange County, are safe for people, pets and plants.

When it comes to glassmaking, artist Lena Bergstrom’s visions are crystal clear.

Bergstrom, who has been a member of Orrefors’ design team since 1994, says she likes to challenge traditional boundaries in her works.

“My design language has nothing to do with the alphabet,” she says. “It is irrational, emotional, physical.

“The greatest beauty balances on the brink of failure.”

Bergstrom, who trained at the National College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, got her start in textiles. She has received numerous awards for the strong graphic designs of her rugs and fabrics.

In her glassware, Bergstrom continues to experiment with tradition. Expo, her latest collection will be on display today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the new Galleri Orrefors Kosta Boda in South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa. Bergstrom will be on hand to personalize pieces for customers.

In the Expo collection are five series--Kampai, Obelix, Squeeze, Pipeline and Havanna.

Havanna vases ($175), reminiscent of Cuban cigars, are 9 inches tall) and plump yet appealing. The gray hue ranges from light to dark. Two are adorned with sandblasted dots.

Galleri Orrefors Kosta Boda, a 1,200-square-foot store, is on the first level of South Coast Plaza, off Jewel Court. It offers crystal stemware, bowls, vases, pitchers and other home accessories.
