Another Bomb Found at a La Crescenta School

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

For the second time in a month, a live bomb was found in a La Crescenta public school, authorities said, and was safely detonated in a corner of the playground.

The explosive device was found Sunday afternoon by a teacher at Dunsmore Elementary School, said Glendale police Lt. Don Meredith. The Los Angeles County sheriff’s arson/explosives detail detonated the bomb without injury or damage, Meredith said.

On March 31, an assistant principal of Rosemont Middle School found a bomb hanging from a classroom doorknob. That too was detonated without incident.

“We have no facts to connect the two” bomb incidents, Meredith said.

Neither police nor Glendale Unified School District officials would reveal any information about the bomb, so as not to jeopardize the investigation, Meredith said.

On Sunday, a Dunsmore teacher working at the school noticed a suspicious-looking item near a classroom, said Vic Pallos, a district spokesman. About four hours later, the explosive device was “rendered harmless,” he said.

The second bomb has prompted increased security at the schools, Pallos said.

“There is a heightened level of concern,” he said Sunday. “All of the schools are being checked tonight and again in the morning before the students arrive.”
