Cultural District Plan to Be Unveiled

Share

Ventura has come a long way since 1992, when the City Council first approved a cultural arts plan.

Ventura artists now throw open their studios to the public for art walks, musicians strum guitars as part of the Olivas Folk Music Series, local historians lead inquisitive residents through downtown historic and cultural tours, and music lovers from all over flock to the annual Ventura Chamber Music Festival.

But art and culture lovers are not stopping there.

At a special meeting Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Ventura City Hall, the city’s Arts and Cultural Affairs Committee will unveil the long-awaited Downtown Cultural District Plan.

The report offers recommendations for establishing a cultural district downtown and includes strategies for converting a downtown facility into a community cultural center.

The report is one of the final goals laid out in the 1992 cultural plan, put together by more than 200 Ventura residents.

Thursday’s meeting will present the findings of the Downtown Cultural District Plan and offer an opportunity for public input.

After the meeting, a final recommendation will be made to the City Council.
