Esperanza Pitcher Headed to Chapman

Catie Lacy, a softball pitcher from Esperanza High, has made an oral commitment to attend Chapman next fall, her mother Barbara said Monday.

She is 7-5 with a 0.47 earned-run average this season. She also has 73 strikeouts in 74 innings.

Irvine Novaquatics announced that Billy Brown, who attended Fullerton High and Fullerton College, has signed a letter of intent to swim at Massachusetts, and that Anthony Iacopetti of Huntington Beach has signed with New Mexico.

Brown, the 1996 Southern Section Division II section champion in the 100-yard breaststroke, considered Utah and Wyoming. Iacopetti, finalist in the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley last year, considered Rice and Texas Christian.

Zellie Dow, who coached Corona del Mar girls’ basketball, has resigned after one season.

Dow, a member of the Orange County Officials’ Assn., said he wanted to spend more time following the career of his son, Tony, a sophomore basketball player at Ocean View.

He said he will continue to coach at Los Caballeros Tennis and Racquet Club on an individual basis.

Matt Bryant, a two-sport star at Westwood High School in Lassen County, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Southern California College, SCC Coach Bill Reynolds said Monday.

Bryant, a 5-foot-11 guard, averaged 26.7 points and 11.6 assists during four years as a starter for Westwood, a school with 220 students. He was a two-time all-state Division V selection.

Freshman forward Greg Clark, a medical redshirt last season because of a shoulder injury, has been granted release from his scholarship at Long Beach State.

A 6-7 swingman who played at Grossmont High in La Mesa, Clark is the younger brother of the Detroit Tigers’ Tony Clark.

Fountain Valley’s Chris Miyahara shot four-under-par 68 Monday to win the $1,000 first prize in the Simple Green Golf Tour 18-hole event at Mile Square in Fountain Valley.

Brett Brummett and Brad Greer of Huntington Beach and Mission Viejo’s Steve Runge each shot 69 to tie for second place.

Robbie Quinn of Crown Valley Divers of Laguna Niguel finished third in the men’s 14-15 one-meter springboard at the Western National Diving Championships Sunday in Lincoln, Neb. He was fourth in the three-meter event Saturday, and teammate Michelle Brown was third in the women’s 14-15 one-meter springboard.

Laura Kroninger, a distance runner from Dana Hills High, has signed a national letter of intent to attend New Mexico, Dana Hills Coach Glenn Forster said.

Kroninger has helped Dana Hills to two consecutive Orange County cross-country titles.
