A 58-year-old man stabbed multiple times during an apparent robbery attempt over the weekend was listed in fair condition Monday at Ventura County Medical Center.
I. J. Melchior Jr. suffered two stab wounds to his chest and one to his arm during the 9:15 p.m. assault Sunday at Afternoon Motors at 2440 E. Thompson Blvd., police said.
Authorities said Melchior was locking up the shop when two men emerged from the shadows and demanded money. When Melchior said he had none, the pair attacked him at the back of the lot, which runs along South Evergreen Drive, police said.
After Melchior escaped, he reported the incident to authorities, describing the assailants as two white men in their early 20s, both about 5 feet, 7 inches tall, 150 pounds, wearing dark beanie caps and dark sweatshirts.
Police are continuing their investigation.
