Flip Back a Couple of Pages of L.A. History

A note of clarification on “The Battle For L.A.” (May 8): L.A. Magazine was founded a little earlier than your stated 1962. It was founded in 1958 by Myron and Estelle Roberts, Sasha Gilien and me as a literary/city magazine.

We ran it for several years at break-even level. (We were writers, not ad salesmen.) Then we sold it to the Prompter, a local night-life publication, which expanded the name to Los Angeles and began the buildup through several owners to the glossy ad showcase of today. For many years, a note on the masthead pointed out that it incorporated our L.A. Magazine.
