TV Ratings

The TV ratings system that was criticized by the town hall meeting has many flaws, the main one being its very existence (May 20). People seem upset that the ratings networks give for shows do not match with ratings viewers would give themselves. Of course they don’t. Most people (especially a TV executive and a machinist from Peoria) aren’t going to agree on the rating for a given program.
That is why determining what shows a child watches is up to the parent, no matter what symbol is displayed in the corner of the screen. Parents monitor what books and people their children come in contact with. Why do parents seem so eager to give up that responsibility when it comes to TV (and increasingly, the Internet)? Perhaps, because the parents are watching cable TV in the other room.
