Atlanta Hawks assistant coach Bill Hanzlik reportedly has accepted the Denver Nuggets’ offer to be their coach.

The Nuggets scheduled a news conference for today to introduce a new coach, but didn’t say who they picked.

Both KCNC and KUSA reported that Hanzlik is the new Nugget coach.

Last Thursday, Hanzlik said he had been offered the job and the only sticking point was working out a contract.

Hanzlik said he wants at least a three-year deal before stepping into the shaky situation in Denver. The Nugget were 21-61 last season.

Hanzlik played for the Nuggets when Denver’s new general manager, Allan Bristow, was an assistant and then was an assistant under Bristow for five years in Charlotte.

“Having Allan as a GM is a big-time plus for me,” Hanzlik said last week.

Other candidates interviewed were former Phoenix coach Paul Westphal and former Philadelphia coach John Lucas.
