‘World’ Still Rules the Weekend

Share

The dinosaurs of Steven Spielberg’s “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” continued to devour the competition, taking in $34.1 million in the movie’s second weekend of release, for a total of $141.5 million--the fastest rise of any movie ever.

Although ticket sales declined 62% from the opening weekend, John Krier, who heads the box-office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations, said the drop-off is not an apt comparison since the film debuted over the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend, when children are out of school and families traditionally flock to the movies.

* It may go unnoticed in all the publicity about “Lost World,” but Dimension Film’s thriller “Scream” has quietly passed the $100-million mark in ticket sales, cementing its reputation as one of the year’s sleepers. The film was released Dec. 20.
