Share

McGruff the Crime Dog will be one of many attractions when the Camarillo Police Department’s first mobile storefront begins operation Saturday.

McGruff will discuss crime and hand out coloring books.

The storefront, which will rotate among shopping centers every first and third Saturdays of the month, will be staffed by volunteers from the Citizens Patrol, Disaster Area Response Team and Law Enforcement Explorers.

The Citizens Patrol usually assists with weekend patrols, while the Disaster Area Response Team has helped with such emergencies as the La Conchita landslide, the Northridge earthquake and the 1993 floods.

Law Enforcement Explorers, under the auspices of the Boy Scouts of America, are youths age 14 to 20 who assist with traffic control, accompany an officer on rounds one night a month and get involved in community projects.

In addition to volunteers from the three groups, there will be deputies from the Camarillo station, and a Bike Patrol officer distributing crime prevention literature and providing fingerprinting services for children.

The department also hopes to attract more volunteers, Capt. David Tennessen said. ‘

The mobile operation will be at Target Plaza on Las Posas Road and Daily Drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
