Working Summit: A special gathering Thursday called the San Fernando Valley Welfare-to-Work Summit is expected to help determine how welfare reform will change the region. The invitation-only summit at Cal State Northridge, sponsored by Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chairman Zev Yaroslavsky, above, will feature participants from the business, social services and education fields.

THE AX DROPS: After weeks of nervous anticipation, Cal State Northridge coaches and athletes are bracing for an announcement expected today on which sports will survive cuts prompted by financial and gender-equity concerns. (C1) . . . . On the chopping block may be men’s baseball, volleyball, soccer, swimming and golf.

AND DROPS AGAIN: The Los Angeles City Council voted to oppose a bill sponsored by Assemblyman Tony Cardenas that would allow the San Fernando Valley to secede from the city if two-thirds of Valley voters supported it. Cardenas expected the opposition and predicted it would have little effect on the bill’s chances. B4
