Galaxy update--Today’s game presents interim coach Octavio Zambrano with the first opportunity to show why he should be considered as the full-time replacement for Lothar Osiander, who was fired Monday. Zambrano says he favors a more offensive style of play than Osiander, and has no objection to goalkeeper Jorge Campos playing as a forward. The only player absent today is striker Eduardo Hurtado, who is in Bolivia, playing for Ecuador in the Copa America. Seven of the Galaxy’s nine losses have been by a single goal. Playmaker Mauricio Cienfuegos returns from World Cup duty with El Salvador.

Mutiny update--The team with the best regular-season record in the league last year (20-12) under Thomas Rongen is playing .500 soccer under John Kowalski, who took over as coach when Rongen moved to the New England Revolution. One reason for the drop is striker Roy Lassiter, who netted a league-high 33 goals in 35 regular-season and playoff games a year ago. This season, Lassiter has been injured and has scored only twice. League MVP Carlos Valderrama, with seven assists so far, orchestrates the attack. Italian forward Giuseppe Galderisi leads Tampa Bay scorers with four goals and five assists in eight games. The Mutiny lost four in a row before defeating the Columbus Crew, 3-1, in its most recent game. Brazilian midfielder Gilmar, 27, joined the team last week.
