When Al Martin of the Pittsburgh Pirates arrived in Minneapolis recently for a game against the Twins, he looked out his hotel window and saw what he thought was the Metrodome.

So the next afternoon, he showed up for a pregame workout and was denied admittance by a security guard. Why? Because he wasn’t at the Metrodome. He was at the basketball arena, Target Center.

“It did seem kind of small,” Martin told Jim Caple of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “I was thinking. ‘It’s a bandbox. No wonder the ball flies out of here.’ ”

And finally: Mike Ditka, the new coach of the New Orleans Saints, will close regular-season practices to the media for the first time in the history of the franchise.

“There’s no reason for anybody to see what we’re doing. Nobody except us,” Ditka said.

Ditka did throw a bone to the media--allowing access to pre-practice stretching and warmups. How exciting!
