Fire Chars 100 Acres; Freeway Closed for Hour

A brush fire south of San Fernando Road near the Antelope Valley Freeway blackened about 100 acres and took more than 150 firefighters to beat back Sunday, said county fire officials.

The fire, which broke out about 3:30 p.m., burned an uninhabited area along the southeast side of the freeway. Firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service contained the blaze before it could jump the freeway to threaten homes on the other side, said Clyde Taylor, a spokeswoman for the County Fire Department.

The California Highway Patrol closed the freeway’s northbound traffic for more than an hour before opening two lanes between the Golden State Freeway and San Fernando Road. Firefighters used half a dozen water-dropping aircraft to help extinguish the flames about 7 p.m., Taylor said. No injuries were reported.

One month ago to the day, a brush fire darkened 400 acres about a mile north of where Sunday’s fire started. That fire did cross the freeway and threaten homes. About 45 residences near Placerita Canyon Road were evacuated. The blaze came within 20 yards of several houses before being extinguished by firefighters.
