The San Diego Padres released infielder Terry Shumpert after activating him from the disabled list Tuesday night.

The Padres had assigned Shumpert outright to triple-A Las Vegas on May 27 to clear a roster spot when Ken Caminiti came off the disabled list, but Shumpert contended he had a hamstring injury and should go on the disabled list instead.

After a second opinion by Dr. Lew Yocum confirmed an injury to the left hamstring, the Padres put him on the disabled list June 6. When he was well enough to play again, the Padres gave him his outright release.

Shumpert played in 13 games for the Padres this season, hitting .273 with one homer and six RBIs.

Scott Huff, 28, stabbed outside Three Rivers Stadium after a game between the Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates, may have argued with his attacker about tickets, police said.

Huff was in serious condition at Allegheny General Hospital and his alleged attacker was in police custody, homicide Det. Terry O’Leary said.

Emergency personnel worked on Huff, who was shirtless and on his back outside Gate A on Monday as fans streamed by following the Braves’ 6-0 victory over the Pirates.

Police recovered a knife from beneath a nearby parked car, and James Geran, 39, of Pittsburgh was jailed on charges of aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person.
