Malabar Man Wins Hambletonian; Sanabelle Island’s Streak Ends at 23

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Malvern Burroughs made a patient and gutsy move on the inside with favored Malabar Man in the stretch to become the second amateur driver to win trotting’s biggest race, the $1-million Hambletonian at the Meadowlands Raceway.
Malabar Man, in winning for the 20th time in 22 career starts, finished a length in front of Take Chances to earn $500,000 for Burroughs, who also owns the colt and donates his winning driver’s share of that to charity to maintain his amateur status.
In the $346,750 Mistletoe Shalee Pace for 3-year-old fillies at the Meadowlands Racetrack, Sanabelle Island’s winning streak ended at 23 races with a third-place finish to favored Steinam’s Place.
Sanabelle Island was boxed in at the top of the stretch and didn’t have clear running room until it was too late.
She finished 1 1/4 lengths behind the winner.
