A body found just north of Huntington Beach Pier was identified late Monday as a missing 19-year-old Long Beach body surfer.

The body of Mark Lane White Jr. was found just before 6 p.m. Monday and was positively identified six hours later by coroner’s investigators using fingerprint records, according to police.

White was overwhelmed by the surf Aug. 5 near the spot where his body washed up, Huntington Beach Police Lt. Dan Johnson said.

White, who planned to attend Penn State University in the fall, was body surfing with a 20-year-old friend about 8 p.m. when he ran into trouble, police said.

The two friends were separated by a powerful rip current and abruptly found themselves flailing in the pounding surf, according to witnesses and police.

A nearby surfer managed to rescue White’s friend and then alerted lifeguards, who launched an unsuccessful three-hour search for White.
