Saberhagen to Return Against Angels

Bret Saberhagen will pitch for the Boston Red Sox on Friday at Anaheim, his first start in the major leagues since Oct. 1, 1995.

Saberhagen, 33, sat out all of last season after shoulder surgery May 28, 1996, then signed with Boston as a free agent.

He made his first appearance in 22 months for Lowell of the class-A New York-Penn League on July 27. He gave up three runs and four hits in five innings Sunday in triple-A Pawtucket’s game against Rochester.

Saberhagen replaces Tom Gordon, who will be a long reliever.

Chicago General Manager Ron Schueler said hitting coach Bill Buckner was fired because the White Sox were not hitting well and not because of a personality clash with Manager Terry Bevington.. . . White Sox pitcher Bill Simas was put on the 15-day disabled list because of a recurrence of tendinitis in his right rotator cuff. Right-hander Jeff Darwin was called up from triple-A Nashville.. . .
