New Educators Learn Teaching Strategies at Clinic

A kind of boot camp for teachers continues today for 130 new instructors hired on emergency credentials by the city’s school district.

The weeklong clinic focuses on basic instructional strategies, such as how to teach math and reading, and includes tips on behavioral management, said Roxanne Torosian, coordinator of the Montebello Unified School District’s Beginning Teachers Summer Academy.

District officials started the academy last year to help orient nearly 100 teachers who had been hired to help meet class-size reduction requirements, even though they had not completed work on their teaching credentials.

“We wind up needing to give a whole lot more content because [the new teachers] didn’t finish student teaching,” Torosian said.

Classes are scheduled to begin Sept. 3 at most schools in the 32,000-student district.
