Budget Clears Way for 4 New Teachers
For the teachers who hung in there waiting for Gov. Pete Wilson to sign the state budget--and with it give public schools $800 per student in the name of class-size reduction--the wait has paid off.
Four additional third-grade teachers were hired by the Oak Park Unified School District this week, following the governor’s signing of the budget Monday.
All the interviewing and verbal agreements were made earlier in the summer, said Supt. Marilyn Lippiatt. But the school district waited for official confirmation that the state would increase its support from $650 to $800 per student before formally signing up the new teachers.
Last year, the 3,500-student district was able to hire 14 third-grade teachers because of class-size reduction, Lippiatt said.
Districtwide, 25 new teachers are being hired this fall; some because of growth and others because of attrition, Lippiatt said.
A new teachers orientation will be held Monday to get the newcomers acquainted with the community of Oak Park and meet support staff, Lippiatt said.
