A 16-year-old suspect remained hospitalized Wednesday after being shot by an off-duty Long Beach police officer whose home he allegedly attempted to burglarize.

The teenager, whose name was not released, was listed in fair condition at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, said Sheriff’s Department officials, who are reviewing the incident. They added that the youth would be charged with attempted burglary when he is released from the hospital.

Department spokesmen said Long Beach robbery Det. Edward Lomax shouted a warning before shooting the youth in the upper body about 12:20 p.m. Monday. Lomax told investigators that he discovered the teenager trying to break into a rear window of his home in the 11400 block of East 216th Street.

Witnesses said the boy dropped a kitchen knife--and possibly a second unidentified object--while fleeing the officer’s patio, sheriff’s Deputy Michael Irving said.
