Fireworks Issue May Go Back on Ballot

City leaders are considering a ballot measure that would allow the sale of certain types of fireworks.

In 1990, residents voted to outlaw the sale and use of all fireworks in the city. But recently, the City Council has discussed placing a measure to allow so-called safe and sane fireworks on the June 1998 ballot.

Mayor Frank Fry Jr. said he was approached by civic and youth groups who see fireworks as a potential revenue source. Fry said he believes “safe and sane” fireworks, which exclude firecrackers and bottle rockets, do not present a significant danger.

“People buy them in Garden Grove and light them here anyway,” Fry said.
