Shalom Wagon Will Make House Calls

Share

Jewish newcomers to the county are encouraged to call for a visit from the Shalom Wagon, a welcoming service provided by the women’s division of the United Jewish Appeal/Federation of Ventura County.

Volunteers acquaint new residents with Jewish programs, organizations, congregations and activities available in the area.

They come bearing gifts, including a guide to neighborhood resources and a welcome basket with Sabbath candles, a Jewish calendar, charity box, bread and salt.

The federation’s executive director, Eitan Ginsburg, said the organization acts as a central information source for the county’s Jewish groups.

“It is a natural first stop for people who are aware of how organized Jewish communities work,” he said. “We do this on the behalf of every Jewish organization in the vicinity.”

Shalom Wagon volunteers add “a more personal touch” to the service of providing information about a new area, he said. “It’s much nicer to meet someone than to just get information in the mail.”

To arrange a visit, call 647-7800. The service is free.
