Under the theme “Greeting You With Open Arms,” Cal Lutheran University plans a variety of activities to welcome the freshman, transfer and international students who will descend on campus this week.

Orientation for the 330 students of the Class of 2001 will run Saturday through Monday and will include a class photograph in front of the Enormous Luther statue and the traditional repainting of the CLU letters on Mt. Clef Ridge.

“[Orientation] really helps them get settled,” said Lynda Fulford, Cal Lutheran spokeswoman. “For most of them, it’s the first time being away from home.”

International students, coming from 20 different countries, are expected to arrive Thursday, while 152 transfer students are expected Sunday. Social activities are planned to help acclimate those students to campus.

All undergraduate and graduate classes begin Sept. 2.

To herald the beginning of the 1997-98 academic year, Cal Lutheran will hold an opening academic convocation at 10 a.m. Sept. 3 at Samuelson Chapel.

Paul Hanson, a history professor, will give a speech titled “The Past is Prologue.” The event is free and open to the public.

During the convocation, Cal Lutheran students who made the spring 1997 dean’s list and freshmen who were accepted with “honors at entrance” will be recognized.

New faculty will also be introduced.
