Nurseryman Selected to Head Fair Board

Gary Hayakawa, president of Three Star Nursery in Fountain Valley, Thursday was named president of the Orange County Fair Board of Directors.

Hayakawa, 52, who lives in Irvine, was appointed to the board in 1992 and reappointed in 1996.

Each of the eight board members was appointed by Gov. Pete Wilson. There is one vacancy.

The position of board president rotates annually among the members. Hayakawa replaces Jim Lindberg, 74, of Newport Beach, who will stay on the board as a member.

Hayakawa also is involved with the California Assn. of Nurserymen, of which he is president, and the Nursery Growers Assn. He has earned numerous awards for his support and service to various community programs, including Orange County 4-H clubs.

Also Thursday, Emily Sanford, 61, of Huntington Beach was elected vice president of the board. Sanford was appointed to the board in 1994. She was a nurse in the Navy from 1957 to 1985, retiring with the rank of captain.

Board terms are served without pay. Members set policy and make plans for the Orange County Fair and Exposition Center in Costa Mesa. The fair broke attendance records this year.

Fair board meetings are on the fourth Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. in the Memorial Gardens Building, 88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa.
