For the first time this season, a New York manager had a broad smile on his face after his team played the Baltimore Orioles.

Bernard Gilkey had three hits, including a three-run homer, as the Mets ended the Orioles’ run of success against New York teams Saturday with a 13-6 victory.

The Orioles were 5-0 this year against New York teams, taking four from the Yankees before beating the Mets in 12 innings Friday night. Baltimore also went 3-0-1 against the Mets in spring training.

“Maybe this will start a trend that we can continue tomorrow,” Met Manager Bobby Valentine said.

Gilkey tied his career high with four runs batted in and Luis Lopez drove in a season-high three runs for the Mets, who used a 19-hit attack to improve to 3-8 in interleague play. New York trailed, 5-2, before scoring 11 consecutive runs.

“When you face these guys, they’ve got great starting pitching and a great bullpen,” Gilkey said. “You have to be on top of your game, and today we were.”

Edgardo Alfonzo tied a career high with four hits. He is 17 for 29 in his last seven games.

“It was an incredible afternoon. Just one of those days that resolidified why I’m so proud of this team and how proud they should be of each other,” Valentine said. “We had a tough loss last night, then went down 5-2 against the best team in baseball and just kept coming back and battling.”

Chris Hoiles had two singles and a home run for the Orioles, who are 8-3 against NL teams.
