The Flick Filosopher

Address: https://members.aol.com/flickfilos/index.html

What it is: Yet another site about movies. The Flick Filosopher is really MaryAnn Johanson, a freelance copy editor and writer in New York who so far isn’t making any money for the eight to 10 hours she spends updating the site weekly. She says she would like the site to grow but is concerned that advertisers and sponsors would “water down her opinions.”

How it is: The site is mainly three things: Now Playing, Archives and Mailbag. Johanson started the site in September, but she’s already off to a bang-up start. Her writing is clean and accessible, just right for someone aspiring to be your movie pal when “you go to the movies by yourself and then need someone to talk the movie over with afterward.” The graphics are simple and complement the writing. The most peculiar part of the site is the links--weird stream-of-consiousness elements that are actually very funny once you figure out they aren’t mistakes.

Mr. Show

Address: https://www.mrshow.com

What it is: Promotional and informational site for HBO’s “Mr. Show With Bob and David.” Though the site is linked to HBO, it is operated independently. Members of the cast and crew put the site together, which is what distinguishes it from many TV show pages. In fact, the Webmaster, Sean Suhl, is also the show’s graphics coordinator.

How it is: Most of the site is strictly standardsville: cast bios, sound and sketch clips, links and production notes. But it’s all assembled and written by people who work on the show, so it has a little edge, can get a little weird, looks cool and guarantees at least a snicker. (It’s also a good fix for the 40 weeks a year the show’s not on.)
