GOP Strategy

I agree with respected Republican strategist Stu Spencer (Nov. 26) on the fact that the California Republican Party is committing “political suicide” if it doesn’t tone down its consistent anti-Latino rhetoric and action.

However, it cannot do much as long as Pete Wilson is governor and titular head of its party in Sacramento.

A special Assembly race on Nov. 18 clearly showed the extent of the problem. Some 8,000 new Latino voters were the targets of literature that consistently pointed to Wilson and that they should vote for Gil Cedillo because he would “take on” the governor if he was elected.

The result: Cedillo won an overwhelming victory.

There is no doubt organized labor and the Democratic Party will extend this throughout all the districts where Latino voters are a factor next November.
