Police Get Grant to Battle Alcohol-Related Crimes
After failing to receive a state grant earlier in the year, the Pomona Police Department went ahead with its initiatives to combat alcohol-related crimes. Now it has been rewarded.
The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control announced Tuesday that the department received an $84,583 grant to reduce criminal activity at licensed locations. Police departments in Oxnard, Santa Rosa and the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department also received grants.
Pomona Police Officer Dale Spencer said the money has been used to buy a computer for tracking and investigating crimes, maintaining a liaison with Alcoholic Beverage Control and monitoring operations of licensed alcohol business. The department monitors about 240 businesses, Spencer said.
Money for the grants comes from increased state funding to fight alcohol-related crimes, including bars and liquor stores that sell alcohol to minors.
Originally, the ABC awarded 13 grants but added more when the Legislature and Gov. Pete Wilson authorized more funding. The 17 grants, each varying in amount, totaled $1.4 million.
