Council Urges Panel to Retain 310 Area Code

Share

The Culver City Council has voted unanimously to ask the state Public Utilities Commission to keep Culver City within the 310 area code.

The 310 area code is expected to run out of numbers by the end of next year due to enormous growth of fax machines, pagers, cellular phones and modems.

The panel is seeking public comment on whether to create an area code. Proposals include splitting existing geographic coverage areas or assigning an “overlay” or different area code to all new lines.

“It seems to me that the only entities that benefit from what they’re proposing are the phone companies,” Councilman Mike Balkman said.

Throughout the state, the number of area codes--presently 18--is expected to jump to 29 by 2002.
