2 Held in Lottery Scam That Bilked the Elderly
Huntington Park police have arrested two men in connection with a lottery scam aimed at the elderly, authorities said Thursday.
Edinson Aamaya, 28, and Humberto Nunez, 38, were booked for grand theft, said Det. Robert Valencia.
“They targeted the elderly and approached them, stating they were ‘lottery winners,’ but couldn’t retrieve the money because they weren’t U.S. citizens,” Valencia said.
Police said another suspect still at large posed as a lottery official who when contacted by phone would “verify” that the lottery ticket was indeed a winner.
There is an element of greed on the part of the victim that makes this crime possible, police said.
Other people who believe that they may have been victims of the scam are urged to call police at (213) 584-6281.
