Kizierowski Wins to Pace Cal in Men’s Swimming

California’s Bart Kizierowski, a former Mission Viejo High standout, beat Justin Ewers of Stanford to win the 200-yard freestyle in the second day of competition in the UC Irvine Speedo Cup at Belmont Plaza pool in Long Beach.

Kizierowski’s winning time was 1 minute 39.24 seconds. Stanford leads the men’s competition with 812 points. California is second with 613 and Drury third (377).

In the women’s competition, Cal leads with 607.5 points. Nevada is in second with 577 points.

In men’s basketball:

Redlands 71, Chapman 68--Jon Allen scored 19 points as Redlands advanced to today’s championship game of the Redlands tournament. Redlands plays The Masters at 8 p.m.

Redlands has not made the finals since 1995 and has not won the Lee Fulmer Tournament since 1966.

Gil Gonzales scored 17 points for Chapman. The Panthers play in the third-place game against Cal Baptist tonight at 6 p.m.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

UC Irvine 58, San Jose State 41--Chelsea Mackey scored 18 points and had a career-high nine rebounds in a nonconference victory for UC Irvine. The Anteaters improve to 3-1.

San Jose State threatened late, pulling as close as three with 9:26 left in the half.

New Mexico 89, CS Fullerton 52--Abby Garcek scored 26 points in a victory for New Mexico (6-1). Nieshia Cleveland scored 16 points for Fullerton (1-5).
