Senior Center Destroyed in Quake Gets New Site
Clients of a senior center whose original site was destroyed in the Northridge earthquake celebrated the opening of a new site Tuesday.
The January 1994 quake forced the WISE Senior Services Adult Day Care program out of its facility at 15th Street and Wilshire Boulevard, said Maria Arechaederra, executive director of WISE Senior Services.
After operating in Santa Monica’s Ken Edwards Center for nearly four years, the program has moved to a city-owned building in Memorial Park on 14th Street. It provides activities and meals for about 25 senior citizens a day, including many with Alzheimer’s disease.
Program manager Josh Einhorn said the facility holds yoga and music classes, outings to local restaurants and hosts lecturers from the Sierra Club and the Getty Center, among others. The adult day care program’s goal is to keep seniors active and out of institutional living situations as long as possible.
