Husky Kreutz Lured by NFL

The Washington Huskies are going to lose Olin Kreutz, a mainstay of their offensive line the past two seasons, to the NFL.

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound All-American center announced Wednesday he is going to pass up his senior season to make himself available for the draft in April.

Wisconsin running back Ron Dayne, a leading Heisman Trophy candidate at the beginning of the season who was entertaining thoughts of jumping to the NFL, will return to Wisconsin for his junior season, said Ron Reid, his uncle and advisor.

UCLA reserve running back Keith Brown twisted his right knee at practice. A sprained ligament was diagnosed and an MRI exam ordered. . . . Dean Pees, a former defensive coordinator at Michigan State, was hired as coach at Kent State. . . . Ron Dickerson, who resigned at Temple after an 8-47 mark in five seasons there, was hired as head coach at Division I-AA Alabama State. . . . Seven North Carolina football players have been charged with misdemeanor assault in connection with a late-night fight outside a nightclub earlier this month that left another student injured. Among those served with summonses Sunday were defensive starters Greg Williams and Robert Williams.
