FISH REPORT

FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--Few reports, but one angler weighed in 14 bass, largest 9 pounds, before releasing them into upper lake. Daniel Robison and Ray Diaz, Whittier, several bass to 6 1/2 pounds. Some trout caught in lower lake.

LAKE PIRU--Trout action has picked up, with trollers still doing best. Try a fire-tiger Rapala or an orange Needlefish lure in the middle of the lake. Several limits. Catfish bite fair at north end. No bass bite to speak of.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass biting on anchovies and occasionally on surface lures and Kastmasters. Catfish bite consistent in areas near muddy water. Yi Chong, North Hollywood, 13-pound catfish, on anchovy at Nugget Point. Largemouth and smallmouth bass action slow to fair.

LAKE CACHUMA--Largemouth bass bite picking up some, biting in backs of coves on spinnerbaits and crankbaits. Red ear perch still active at flats, biting on night crawlers. Lots of trout planted, but the fish have yet to perk up.

LAKE CASITAS--Dwayne Styles, Port Hueneme, 11-14 and 6-4 bass, on crawdads. John Shull, Ojai, 10-2 bass, on Castaic Soft Trout. Several slightly smaller fish. Catfish still biting well. Top fish, a 19 1/2-pounder.

CORONA LAKE--Trout bite wasn’t much, but should improve with a combined 10,000 pounds of rainbows (and some catfish) for Corona and Santa Ana River lakes in the coming days. Top trout for the week, a 4-7 by Steve Pope, Corona, on Power Bait from shore. Top fish, a 9-3 catfish (part of a 22-pound stringer of five) by Earnest Williams, Mira Loma, on night crawlers from shore.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--The extra trout (see Corona Lake) will boost an already good bite. Eight fish topped 10 pounds this week, the largest a 14-1 (part of a 27-pound stringer) by Anthony Laurenzi, Yorba Linda.

IRVINE LAKE--Largest trout, a 7 1/4-pounder by Bill Williamson, Anaheim, on rainbow Power Bait-inflated night crawler combo at west shore. The bite is slowly improving and another load of Mt. Lassen Hatchery rainbows added this week will help matters.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Lake was hammered first by rains, which resulted in a brief closure, then by winds that toppled shoreline trees, which may improve bass habitat. Meanwhile, the trout bite has rebounded nicely, and the catfish bite has been steady all week.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass best bet, but nothing special, with fish averaging 3-6 pounds, biting mainly at east end. Trout and largemouth bass bites fair at best.

LAKE PERRIS--Ron Gayton, Garden Grove, 13 1/4-pound bass, on Castaic Soft Trout at Point 5. Most of the bass, however, are 12-13 inches.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--A 9-pound bass was caught at El Capitan, but the bite is slow to fair at best. Several limits of trout recorded at Miramar and Murray.

LAKE CUYAMACA--Straight from the ranger’s mouth: “High winds and low temperatures have put the deep freeze on the trout bite.” Water has been in the mid-30s all week.
